Custom Stitching FAQs

  • Commissioning a custom piece from Source Material is a fun and exciting collaboration!

    Here’s what to expect:

    1. Design consultation:

This is the beginning of our collaboration! During a design consultation, we’ll go through a series of questions to get to know you and your style, as well as what you’re looking for from your piece.

    2. Sketching

After your design consultation, Source Material will create several sketches for your review and approval, until we land on the perfect design.

All sketches and designs are Source Material property and cannot be taken to another designer, maker, or artist of any kind.

    3. Design Approval

When you’re happy with your garment’s design direction, you’ll approve a final sketch. We’ll then set a delivery date and confirmed the estimated cost.

    4. Deposit Invoice

50% of the total cost of your garment must be paid before stitching begins. This is to ensure that the labor put into your piece is paid for. The remaining 50% cost of your garment is due after completion, before shipping.

      Deposits are non-refundable.

    5. Stitching Begins

After you’ve paid your deposit, stitching begins! This is an hour long, labor intensive process using antique sewing machinery.

    6. Photos

We love sharing the design process with you and we will give you as many relevant updates as we can along the way. Because of the delicate nature of the machines, and the labor intensity of the design process, we will often will not share photos of your garment until closer to the end of the making process. This is to protect our work. We will share multiple photos and process videos after the final deposit has been paid.

    7. FInal Invoice

When your piece has been complete, you’ll be sent a final invoice. This invoice must be paid in full before your garment Is shipped. Delayed payment will result in delayed shipping.

    8. Delivery

After your final deposit has been paid, your order ships! We use repurposed and sustainable shipping materials to safely get your garment to you.

    9. Wear it!

Once your garment has been delivered, take it for a spin! We love to see photos and videos of you in your Source Material pieces.

  • Nope, leave the design work to me! If you love chainstitch but don’t know where to start with a custom design, Source Material’s design consultation is made specifically to take the work of creating your custom piece off of your plate.

  • Absolutely! Source Material loves styling and designing for artists and performers.

  • Chainstitching is a labor intensive and manual process. To accurately price a garment, the garment type, size of design, number of colors, and complexity of design are all considered. Please schedule a design consultation to get accurate pricing information.

  • After your design consultation, and before you pay your project deposit, we will set a delivery date together. This is baed on the time needed to create the project as well as the number of additional projects in the queue. While it is my priority to deliver every garment on time, your delivery date may be pushed at any time due to volatile nature of the antique stitching machines.

Other reasons your shipment may be delayed:

    • Delayed payment of final invoice

    • Delayed delivery of garment for stitching

    • Mail carrier delays

Source Material is not responsible for delays, returns, or delivery issues after a package has been delivered to a mail carrier.

If you are experiencing delays after your item has shipped, please contact the mail carrier.

  • You will be invoiced for 50% of the total cost of your project as a deposit at the time of
